ABOUT THE ARTIST

A prominent concert pianist and educator, and Piano Magazine’s Artist of the Month for December 2021, Ms. Buechner will perform Sunday March 13th at 3:30 pm at the Indiana History Center in Indianapolis. This replaces a concert on the same date by Olga Kern, whose performance—due to a scheduling conflict—will be rescheduled in a future season.

Buechner was a winner of the first American Pianists Awards in 1981, a competition then run by the Beethoven Foundation and located in New York. The prize provided her entrance into the International Beethoven Piano Competition Vienna, and she went on to win gold at the 1984 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and bronze at the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition.

“It was a very different organization [in 1981], and it has grown in wonderful and adventurous ways. I’m quite proud as it was one of the first big competitions that I won,” she notes.

As a transgender woman, Ms. Buechner uses her notoriety as a platform to advocate for transgender rights and recently debuted a one-woman show narrating her life story at Theaterlab in New York City.

“It is with great excitement and pride that in our 42nd year we still support and celebrate one of the first winners of our competition,” adds American Pianists Association CEO Peter Mraz.

Tickets are available at americanpianists.eventbrite.com
